BREAKING: Aviation Crisis Looms as National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) Orders Total Shutdown of Airport Services Nationwide

Published on 8 August 2025 at 17:30

In a swift and decisive move that threatens to paralyze air travel across Nigeria, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has issued a formal notice of withdrawal of services, directing all airport workers under its jurisdiction to cease operations effective Monday, 11th August 2025, from 05:00 hours (5:00 AM).

This directive was contained in an official memo released by the union leadership earlier today and shared with stakeholders across the aviation sector.

According to NUATE, the decision to ground all airport activities comes after several unresolved issues, including:

Unmet demands for improved welfare packages for aviation workers.

Alleged breaches of labor agreements by some private airport operators.

Non-compliance with safety standards and regulatory frameworks in certain airports.

Unfair labor practices, including casualization and outsourcing of critical jobs.

✈️ What This Means

If the strike goes ahead as planned, passengers should expect:

Mass flight delays and cancellations across all domestic and international routes.

Suspension of ground handling, baggage services, and airport security operations.

Disruption in immigration and customs clearance processes, especially at major international gateways like Murtala Muhammed International Airport (Lagos), Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (Abuja), and Port Harcourt International Airport.

🚨 NUATE Speaks

In a press statement signed by NUATE General Secretary Comrade Ocheme Aba, the union lamented the "continued insensitivity of aviation employers and government agencies to the plight of workers, despite repeated engagement and negotiations."

> “This industrial action is a last resort. All airport workers are hereby directed to withdraw their services without exception. This action will persist until all our demands are met,” the statement read.

🛑 Reactions from the Industry

Airlines, travel agencies, and airport authorities are said to be in emergency meetings to assess the potential impact. Some carriers have begun issuing travel advisories and are considering adjusting schedules ahead of Monday.

The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has not yet issued an official response as of press time, but insiders suggest frantic efforts are underway to avert a full-blown crisis.
