In a heartwarming display of leadership and mentorship, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on Friday, July 31, received an unusual yet delightful visitor at his office—a young boy, Ezra Obareki, who dressed as a Commissioner of Police for his school’s Career Day and won the Governor’s admiration and time.
Despite a rainy day and a packed official itinerary, including commissioning the ultra-modern NUJ Auditorium and presenting official vehicles to members of the NUJ State Working Committee, the Governor made time to host young Ezra in a manner reserved for the highest-ranking dignitaries.
Clad in a perfectly tailored police uniform with the epaulettes of a Commissioner, the smiling Ezra arrived in a black Toyota Prado SUV, accompanied by his proud parents—Mr. Onoriode Obareki and Lady Helen Obareki, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady.
A Day of Surprises and Symbolism
The day began routinely as Governor Eno returned from an official trip and moved swiftly between engagements, including the commissioning of Blugrin Fabrics Stores in Uyo. However, curiosity was piqued when the Governor’s convoy suddenly diverted from its expected course to the Government House—not the NUJ Secretariat as earlier scheduled.
As staff and members of the press team—including this reporter—began to suspect a missed appointment, it was revealed that the Governor was making a special detour to receive the new "Commissioner" of Police.
What unfolded was an unforgettable scene: Governor Umo Eno, alongside his Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the Secretary to the State Government Prince Enobong Uwah, and top aides, formally received young Ezra in full ceremonial style. The Governor introduced his visitor to members of the State Executive Council and took him on a guided tour of his office.
A Dream Encouraged
Ezra’s dream of joining the police force was sparked by admiration for his late grandfather—a Superintendent of Police—and further nurtured by his interactions with officers from his school’s Career Day. After visiting the real Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, Ezra expressed a wish to meet the Governor, and the CSO facilitated what became a dream come true.
“You are welcome, Sir,” Governor Eno greeted warmly, reinforcing his reputation as a leader who connects deeply with the aspirations of young people.
The visit lasted about 20 minutes, but the memory will last a lifetime for Ezra—and possibly shape his future.
Governor Eno: A Mentor to the Next Generation
Governor Eno's reception of Ezra wasn't a one-off gesture. Known for his affection toward children, the Governor is frequently seen stopping to greet, carry, or bless children at public events. He believes in cultivating the next generation and actively makes time to inspire and encourage young minds.
His commitment to mentorship was further affirmed when he returned to fulfill all his day's engagements, including the NUJ event, where he was honored by NUJ President Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi as "Media-Friendly Governor of the Year."
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” the Governor was quoted as saying, echoing the famous words of Eleanor Roosevelt.
With role models like Governor Umo Eno and CP Azare showing the value of support and recognition, young Ezra’s dream may well be on a fast track to reality.
