The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has been conferred with the prestigious traditional title of Iya Oba of Ikorodu Kingdom in a colourful ceremony that attracted dignitaries, monarchs, political leaders, and members of the Ikorodu community.

The title, which translates to “Mother of the King,” was bestowed on her by the Ayangbure of Ikorodu, His Royal Majesty Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi, in recognition of her motherly role, national service, and contributions to the upliftment of women and children across Nigeria.

“This is a title that reflects not just honour, but deep trust and appreciation for her tireless service to the nation and her unwavering support for traditional institutions,” the Ayangbure said during the investiture ceremony.

Draped in regal attire and welcomed with traditional chants and praise-singing, the First Lady expressed heartfelt gratitude for the honour.

“This recognition by the great people of Ikorodu is not just for me but for every Nigerian woman working hard to shape a better future,” Mrs. Tinubu said.

The ceremony also showcased Ikorodu’s rich cultural heritage, featuring royal horsemen, age-grade performances, masquerades, and traditional drumming.

Several political figures, First Ladies of other states, and key figures from the Presidency were present, further underlining the national importance of the occasion.

The conferment of the title Iya Oba of Ikorodu on First Lady Oluremi Tinubu is a symbolic endorsement of her social influence and national presence. However, Street voices of Stone Reporters News believes it’s worth asking how traditional titles and institutions can evolve to address 21st-century challenges.

Mrs. Tinubu’s honour is undoubtedly deserved. But the real legacy lies not in the beads and garments, but in sustained partnerships between the palace, the people, and policymakers.
