President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially approved the reconstitution of the Governing Council and Board of Trustees of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYREP), reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling environmental pollution in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions.
The Minister of Environment will serve as Chairman of the Governing Council, underscoring the government’s focus on environmental oversight and sustainable remediation efforts.
New Governing Council Composition
The Governing Council now includes representatives from various stakeholder groups, ensuring broad-based participation:

Environmental NGOs: Loanyie Barituka Victor

Niger Delta Communities: Bright Onyebuchi Jacob and Henry Obiabure

Ogoni Community: Professor Barinedum Michael Nwibere and Barrister Baride Abdul Gwezia

Oil-Producing States: Gideon Onyebuwa Melfor and Dr. Ibikunle Omotehinse
Additionally, four alternate members represent Ogoniland and the Niger Delta communities:

Ogoni: Rev. Canon Dr. Abraham Olungwe (reappointed) and Engr. Maeba Power Ekpobari

Niger Delta: Joseph Akedesuo and Beauty Warejuowei
Board of Trustees Reconstituted
President Tinubu also renewed appointments to the HYREP Board of Trustees with Emmanuel Nwiika Deeyah reappointed as chairman, bringing experience and continuity to the board.
