Police Rescue 13-Year-Old Allegedly Abducted in Imo, Found in Anambra โ€” Media Called to Help Reunite Victim with Family

The Anambra State Police Command has announced the rescue and safe custody of a 13-year-old boy, Anayo Stephen, a native of Ubaha-Akparu community in Ideato Local Government Area of Imo State, after he was allegedly abducted and transported across state lines.

According to a statement released by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anayo was discovered at Ideani Junction in Anambra State after managing to escape from his abductors. His miraculous survival and escape have now prompted a call for public support to help identify and reunite him with his family.

“On August 9, 2025, around 3:00 p.m., Anayo was reportedly stopped by four unidentified men in a Hilux vehicle while on his way to fetch grass for his goats,” the police statement read. “They asked for directions and then forcefully abducted him to an unknown location.”

In his own words, the boy described how he escaped while the abductors slept in the bush. Disoriented but determined, he walked until he met local vigilante operatives at Ideani Junction, who quickly contacted law enforcement. He is currently in the care of the police and speaks both Igbo and English fluently, aiding in communication and care.

In a commendable move, the police have reached out to the media, civil society, and the public, requesting support in circulating Anayo’s image and story for possible identification. This step, they say, is crucial to locating his family, particularly in Ideato LGA, Imo State, where he is believed to have been abducted.

“We appeal to the public to assist in identifying the boy so we can facilitate his reunion with his family,” SP Ikenga emphasized.

This incident, while resolved without casualty, highlights the growing concerns of abductions and cross-border criminal activities in Southeastern Nigeria. Security observers and advocacy groups such as FENRAD have repeatedly warned of rising insecurity, kidnappings, and threats to vulnerable populations in both Imo and Anambra states.
