Bayelsa Gov. Diri Vows to Complete All Projects Before Leaving Office in 2028

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has pledged that his administration will not abandon any project—whether initiated by his government or inherited—when he leaves office in February 2028.

Speaking on Wednesday at the 169th State Executive Council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, Governor Diri reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing all ongoing infrastructure and development initiatives, describing them as “legacy projects” that will define his tenure.

Governor Diri listed several high-profile projects, including:

  • The Sagbama–Ekeremor Road, inherited from the immediate past administration and now completed, with work progressing toward Agge.

  • The Yenagoa–Oporoma–Ukubie Road and Phase One of the Nembe–Brass Road, both nearing completion.

  • A nine-storey Civil Servants Secretariat.

  • A 25,000-capacity stadium.

  • A 60MW gas turbine power plant.

“Our target is to make the headquarters of all eight local government areas in the state accessible by road,” Diri said. “All projects currently underway will be completed before we leave office.”

On the Bayelsa West Senatorial Road between Ekeremor and Agge, Diri noted that contractors—China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC)—are currently engaged in sand-filling works. He also confirmed that the Federal Government has released 30% of the funding for the second phase of the Nembe–Brass Road, which it took over.

Governor Diri said the state’s newly acquired gas turbines will be operational before the end of 2025, ensuring around-the-clock electricity supply.

“Power is critical to industrialisation. From my first tenure, it has been a priority. We are almost there,” he said. “Soon, Bayelsa will have its own independent power plant.”

In a separate event, the governor fulfilled his earlier promise to Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Sentome Obi, a Bayelsa-born officer who heads the Financial and Cybercrime Unit at Zone 16 Command, Yenagoa.

Obi gained national recognition after rejecting a $17,000 bribe from a crime suspect, earning him the Inspector-General of Police Integrity Award and the Police Officer of the Year Award for 2024.

In July, Diri had announced a reward of a three-bedroom apartment and a brand-new saloon car for Obi. On Wednesday, represented by his Special Adviser on Security 1, CP Akpoebi Agberebi (rtd), the governor presented the car, describing it as a gesture to encourage professionalism and dedication in public service.

Diri also confirmed that Obi had been promoted from Superintendent of Police to Chief Superintendent of Police following his recommendation to the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

Responding, CSP Obi expressed gratitude to God, the IGP, and Governor Diri, saying the recognition would inspire him to continue serving with integrity.
