The Anambra State Police Command says it has achieved significant progress in its fight against child trafficking and sexual offences, following recent operations that led to the rescue of a six-year-old boy and the arrest of a suspect for defiling a minor.

The operations were disclosed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu (fwc, MNIPS, PhD).

According to the statement, the breakthrough followed an intelligence-led investigation into a case of conspiracy, child stealing, and trafficking transferred from Okpoko Police Station to the State CID Gender Unit.

Police operatives traced the victim to Ondo State, where the six-year-old was found living with an alleged foster parent. The child has since been reunited with his biological mother.

All suspects linked to the case have been charged before the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Court for diligent prosecution.

In a separate incident, on 13th August 2025, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, responded to a distress call in Ebenebe Community, where an 11-year-old girl was allegedly defiled.

The suspect, identified as Uchenna Nweke (18 years old), reportedly forced his way into a bathroom where the victim was bathing and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.

Medical examinations have since confirmed the assault, with police stating that the suspect will be charged to court on Wednesday, 20th August 2025.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable groups across the state.

“Perpetrators of these heinous crimes will face the full weight of the law. The Command remains resolute in ensuring justice for victims of child trafficking, sexual violence, and abuse,” the CP assured.

The Police Command encouraged residents to promptly report cases of sexual and gender-based violence, stressing that such crimes will be met with swift investigation and prosecution.
