The Bauchi State Primary Health Care Board (BSPHCB) has concluded a two-day orientation for 139 newly graduated basic and community midwives, aimed at easing their transition from school to professional practice and reinforcing ethical, evidence-based care. The graduates came from the Aliko Dangote College of Nursing Sciences (ADCON), Bauchi, and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH).

Organisers said the programme was designed to familiarise graduates with the practical realities of frontline maternal and newborn care and to ensure their practice is guided by professional ethics and established midwifery principles. The training emphasised the midwife’s role in improving maternal and child health outcomes across communities.

Of the 139 participants:

  • 59 were community midwives from ATBUTH set-8;

  • 14 were additional graduates from ATBUTH;

  • 64 completed basic midwifery at ADCON, Bauchi; and

  • 2 completed a three-year community midwifery programme.

Trainers and facilitators highlighted the key duties expected of basic and community midwives, including:

  • Providing essential maternal and newborn care.

  • Supporting safe deliveries and managing complications.

  • Promoting health education and community awareness.

  • Delivering community-based services to improve health outcomes.

  • Contributing to efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality.

The orientation covered both routine and complicated midwifery care, including: management of the four stages of labour, antenatal care, birth preparedness and complication readiness, postnatal care (PNC), immunisation schedules, and the antigens mothers and children should receive. Learning methods included presentations, group work, case discussions and practical demonstrations.

Speeches and counselling were delivered by key health sector leaders, including Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, Executive Chairman of BSPHCB; Alhaji Dauda Yakubu, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare; Dr. Rakiya Saleh, Provost of ADCON; and a team of subject-matter facilitators. Officials urged the new midwives to practise with compassion, competence and strict adherence to ethical standards.

BSPHCB said the orientation is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen primary health care services across Bauchi State by ensuring that frontline workers are technically prepared and ethically grounded. The Board reiterated its commitment to continuous professional development and community-focused service delivery.
