FBI Raids John Bolton’s Home in Classified Records Probe

Published on 22 August 2025 at 17:12

The home of John Bolton, former U.S. National Security Adviser under Donald Trump, was searched by FBI agents in Bethesda, Maryland on Friday as part of a “national security investigation in search of classified records,” according to NBC News.

Bolton, who served in the Trump administration for 17 months before being ousted in 2019, was not detained or present during the raid. He was later seen in Washington, D.C., reportedly in talks with FBI officials, according to the Associated Press.

The U.S. Justice Department has not released details on the allegations or materials sought, though reports suggest investigators are probing whether Bolton illegally possessed or leaked classified documents to journalists.

Trump, speaking to reporters on Friday, distanced himself from the development, saying: “I’m not a fan of John Bolton.”

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X, declaring: “NO ONE is above the law… FBI agents on mission.”

Bolton’s strained relationship with Trump has long been public. Once considered a hawkish adviser on foreign policy, particularly toward Iran and North Korea, Bolton was frequently at odds with Trump’s policy direction.

Since leaving office, Bolton has become one of Trump’s most vocal critics. His 2020 memoir accused the former president of misconduct, incompetence, and prioritising personal gain over national security. The Trump administration attempted unsuccessfully to block the book’s publication.

Bolton’s security clearance and federal protection detail were later revoked under Trump’s return to office — a move critics saw as politically motivated retaliation.

This search also comes amid wider concerns over how former U.S. officials handle classified materials, an issue that has sparked heated political and legal battles across party lines.

The FBI’s raid on Bolton’s home adds a new layer of tension between Trump and one of his fiercest former advisers. While details of the probe remain unclear, the case underscores the escalating clash between politics, personal rivalries, and national security in Washington.

Observers say the outcome of the investigation could set another precedent in the growing debate about accountability, secrecy, and the handling of classified information at the highest levels of U.S. government.
