The Executive Chairman of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Justine Shaku, has strongly condemned the recent trafficking of 11 children from Katsina-Ala LGA to Benin City, Edo State, describing the act as “barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable.”

The incident came to light on 18th August 2025, when the Tiv Youth Organization (TYO), Edo State Chapter, led by Comr. Agber Akaajime, uncovered the syndicate. The trafficker, Mhirve Terlumun, a native of Mbajir, Shitile in Katsina-Ala, sold minors aged 5 to 13 to buyers in Benin City for ₦30,000 each, under the guise of “transport money.”

Upon receiving the report, Hon. Dr. Shaku coordinated the safe return of the victims to Benue State, with support from Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, who provided a palliative bus for transportation. On 23rd August, the children were formally received by Tor Tiv, HRM Prof. James Ayatse, and his wife, who condemned the act and placed a stern warning on anyone involved in such crimes.

The victims and the suspect were subsequently handed over to the Katsina-Ala Chairman at his residence, alongside the Katsina-Ala Traditional Council. Hon. Dr. Shaku reiterated that his administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy on trafficking, child abuse, and criminality.

“Anyone currently involved in trafficking or contemplating such acts must immediately reconsider. Perpetrators will be dealt with decisively,” he said, stressing his commitment to safeguarding the lives and future of Katsina-Ala children.

The rescued children underwent medical examinations and treatment, while Mhirve Terlumun was handed over to the police for prosecution.

Child trafficking and exploitation remain significant challenges in parts of Nigeria, particularly where children are targeted for illegal labor, prostitution, or sale to unscrupulous buyers. Edo State has, in recent years, been identified as a hub for such illicit activities, drawing children from neighboring states.

The proactive intervention by Hon. Dr. Shaku, in collaboration with the TYO and Benue State Government, demonstrates the importance of cross-state cooperation, community vigilance, and traditional authority involvement in combating child trafficking.

The incident underscores the urgent need for:

  • Stronger community-based monitoring and reporting mechanisms.

  • Effective law enforcement and prosecution of traffickers.

  • Public awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers and illegality of child trafficking.

It also highlights the critical role of local leadership and traditional institutions in ensuring child safety, reinforcing societal norms against exploitation, and

The swift rescue of 11 children from Katsina-Ala and the decisive action against the trafficker reflects a commitment to child protection, security, and justice. By combining government intervention, traditional leadership, and community vigilance, Katsina-Ala LGA is sending a clear message: the safety and future of children will not be compromised for selfish gains.

The incident also serves as a reminder to other communities and states to strengthen anti-trafficking measures, protect children, and uphold the dignity of Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.
