The Abia State Government has announced plans to formally launch a Contributory Pension Scheme for workers in the state’s public service this September. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a briefing with journalists at Government House, Umuahia, following this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu stated that the scheme aligns with ongoing public service reforms and underscores the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of state workers. “The state government is set to formally launch its workers’ contributory pension scheme. Ten Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) have been selected and approved for the program. Preparations are ongoing for the formal launch, and details regarding the date, time, and venue will be communicated in due course,” he said.
Traffic Enforcement and Market Regulations
The Commissioner also highlighted the government’s intention to strengthen traffic rule enforcement across the state. Offenders, including those driving against traffic, violating traffic lights, or engaging in roadside passenger pickup (“AKANELU”), will face fines or prosecution depending on the severity of the offence.
Prince Kanu additionally warned individuals extorting traders, particularly at the Ngwa Road market, to desist from such illegal activities, noting that the government has identified those involved and is giving a final opportunity to comply.
Expansion of Mass Transit Services
The State Executive Council has approved the extension of mass transit services to far-reaching local government areas such as Arochukwu, Umunnochi, and Ukwa East, following the delivery of 40 new buses expected in November 2025. The initiative is aimed at providing rural residents with the same quality transport services currently available in urban centres like Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.
Contributing to the briefing, Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, confirmed the delivery timeline for the buses and assured that complaints regarding market extortion would be thoroughly investigated. “Revenue collection or imposition is not from my Ministry, but I will consult relevant agencies to address the issue,” Dr. Ukaegbu stated.
Other officials present at the briefing included Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Professor Joel Ogbonna, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma.
