A Nigerian woman who had threatened to take her own life while stranded in Libya has returned safely to Nigeria, sharing a stark warning with fellow citizens against risking migration through dangerous routes.
The woman, whose identity has been withheld for security reasons, recounted the harrowing experiences she endured while in Libya, including threats, exploitation, and extreme hardship. She said her ordeal brought her to the brink of despair, prompting her to contemplate ending her life.
“I want Nigerians, especially our youth, to understand that no matter how hard things seem at home, leaving the country illegally can be far more dangerous. My experience in Libya showed me that the risks are immense,” she said upon arrival.
Her return was facilitated by a coordinated rescue effort involving Nigerian diplomatic missions, international partners, and humanitarian agencies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed her safe repatriation and reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens abroad.
Experts have noted that irregular migration from Nigeria to North Africa and Europe continues to pose serious threats, with many victims facing human trafficking, abuse, and life-threatening conditions. The woman’s experience underscores the urgent need for public awareness campaigns and safer avenues for migration.
The government continues to urge citizens to seek lawful means of travel and to report suspected cases of trafficking to the relevant authorities.
