A tragic incident at Mabushi Bridge, Abuja, on Wednesday claimed the lives of a man, his wife, and their two children following a confrontation with suspected roadside touts, often referred to locally as ‘agbero’.
Reports indicate that the tragedy unfolded when the driver, ferrying his family in a private car, stopped at the Berger Roundabout in Wuse to pick up a relative. Eyewitnesses say the move angered a group of touts, who accused him of violating their informal rules.
During the ensuing altercation, one of the touts allegedly forced his way into the vehicle and grabbed the steering wheel while the car was in motion. The driver lost control, colliding with a painted taxi before crashing violently into a bridge pillar at Mabushi. The impact killed all four occupants instantly.
Angry residents responded swiftly, reportedly apprehending three of the touts. While one of the suspects was allegedly set on fire by the mob, accounts differ regarding the fate of the others, with police intervening to rescue at least two before further harm could occur.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement against roadside harassment and organized tout activities, as well as improved public safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
