Ex-Aviation Minister Sirika Rejects ‘Nigeria Air Scam’ Allegations, Insists on Clean Record

Former Aviation Minister, Senator Hadi Sirika, has denied claims that the controversial Nigeria Air project was a scam, asserting that his tenure in office was free of wrongdoing.

The Nigeria Air initiative, intended to revive the country’s national carrier in the final days of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, faced public skepticism and accusations of mismanagement, with some critics labeling it a scam.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Sirika clarified, “I am a very clean man. I have worked with people. The government has every instrument at their disposal to find (out) my character.”

He further explained that Nigeria Air was structured as a public-private partnership regulated by the Infrastructure Concessioning Regulatory Commission (ICRC), which issued certificates and actively participated in the project process.

Addressing financial concerns, Sirika stated, “It is a lie that I spent N100 billion and it is lost in the process. The total budget for the national carrier was N5 billion, the total amount released was N3 billion, and I left the ministry with over N1 billion.”

While the project ultimately did not take off, Sirika emphasized that he maintained transparency and adhered to proper procedures throughout, defending the integrity of his office.
