Amnesty International Nigeria has received the traditional leadership of Lilu Community, Anambra State, led by Igwe Ikenga na Lilu, HRH (Dr.) G.C. Onyediri, Esq, on a courtesy visit to its Abuja office.

The delegation, which included High Chief Chukwudi Okonkwo (Ichie Ochondo), Chairman of Lilu Agunechamba Security, and Dr. Osita Dominic Okoli (Akaeze), Palace Secretary of Lilu, engaged in wide-ranging discussions on the devastating impact of insecurity in the South-East on the people of Lilu and the urgent need for rebuilding and resilience in the community.

Speaking during the visit, Igwe Onyediri said the Lilu people had endured years of violence that disrupted livelihoods and eroded confidence in the security system. “Our community has been at the frontline of the crisis in Anambra and across the South-East. We have lost lives, property, and trust. Yet, we remain committed to justice, accountability, and rebuilding a safe future for our people,” he stated.

Amnesty International Nigeria commended the community’s leadership for its courage and commitment, describing Lilu as “a model of resilience in the face of adversity.” The organization recalled that the community was among those documented in its latest report, which highlighted how violence and heavy-handed crackdowns continue to undermine human rights in the region.

In his remarks, Amnesty International Nigeria’s Country Director stressed the broader implications of the insecurity: “The cycle of violent clampdowns since August 2015 has left scars across the South-East. Assassinations of prominent figures, frequent attacks on highways, and the targeting of security personnel have created a climate of fear. Communities like Lilu remind us why accountability and human rights must remain at the center of any response.”

High Chief Okonkwo emphasized the role of local security structures in keeping the community safe despite limited resources. “Our Agunechamba Security has stood firm, but without stronger partnerships, we cannot match the scale of threats we face daily,” he noted.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of collaboration between Amnesty International and the Lilu traditional leadership, focusing on amplifying local voices, advocating for human rights, and mobilizing greater support to restore safety and dignity to vulnerable communities.
