Niger State Partners with AfricaRice to Boost Rice Production and Reduce Imports

In a strategic move to strengthen agricultural productivity and reduce rice importation, the Niger State Government has deepened its partnership with AfricaRice. The collaboration, aimed at transforming rice production capacity in the state, was underscored during a fact-finding visit by a delegation from AfricaRice to assess the state’s readiness to drive the initiative.

The partnership, signed in July 2025, seeks to increase Niger State’s annual paddy rice output from 1.5 million metric tons to 10 million metric tons by 2030. It focuses on adopting climate-smart rice production and processing technologies, alongside innovative agricultural practices tailored to the state’s agro-ecological conditions over the next five years.

The Governor of Niger State, popularly known as the “farmer governor,” received the delegation at the Council Chamber of Government House, Minna. He described AfricaRice as a source of inspiration and highlighted the state’s agricultural potential, particularly in rice production. He expressed confidence that the partnership would significantly reduce rice imports by about 70%, create employment opportunities, boost revenue generation, and improve the socio-economic welfare of residents.

The Director-General of AfricaRice, Dr. Baboucarr Manneh, commended Niger State for its impressive agricultural investments. He noted that the commitment and political will demonstrated by the governor would ensure that AfricaRice’s expertise—spanning from improved seedlings to planting systems and farmer extension services—would translate the state’s rice production ambitions into reality, fostering sustainability and self-sufficiency.

The visit signals a strong commitment by both Niger State and AfricaRice to enhance local rice production, empower farmers, and drive socio-economic development through strategic agricultural interventions.
