Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, Honourable Minister of Education, Federal Republic of Nigeria, joined the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, at the Mid-term Assessment and Interactive Session for beneficiaries of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) National Scholarship Programme (NASP) at the tertiary education level.

The programme, which began in 2021, initially awarded scholarships to 47 scholars—one from each state and the Federal Capital Territory. Each beneficiary, now in their 300 level, has received ₦1 million to support and complete their studies. In addition, through the support of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), scholars were provided with laptops to aid their academic journey.

The event was graced by distinguished speakers including the First Lady herself, the Wife of the Vice President, Governors’ Wives, the Director-General of NITDA, Minister’s Wives Forum, and Commissioners of Education.

During the session, the First Lady encouraged scholars not to rely solely on the scholarship but to engage in side hustles and small jobs that would support them during their studies and prepare them for life after graduation. She reminded the beneficiaries that humble beginnings are stepping stones to personal growth and future leadership, highlighting the programme’s combination of financial support and character-building guidance.

Dr. Alausa expressed gratitude to Senator Oluremi Tinubu for her unwavering commitment to education and youth empowerment, noting that the Renewed Hope Initiative has demonstrated the transformative power of investing in young Nigerians.

The National Scholarship Programme complements the Federal Ministry of Education’s broader efforts to enhance access to education. In recent years, over ₦4 billion worth of scholarships have been awarded, alongside 12,440 bursary awards for students in STEMM disciplines, with a total of ₦10 billion disbursed. These interventions are structured into three categories: bursary awards for STEMM fields and sciences, scholarships for undergraduates and postgraduate students, and NELFUND support, which has benefited over 500,000 students with ₦100 billion disbursed to date.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has provided Nigerian students with opportunities to access education without financial barriers while ensuring fair and manageable repayment systems.

As Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Alausa reaffirmed his commitment to building on this momentum, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that every Nigerian student has the tools and support needed to thrive. Together with the First Lady’s leadership and the administration’s commitment, these initiatives are laying the foundation for a knowledge-driven future for Nigeria.
