In a decisive move to strengthen healthcare education and workforce in Lagos, the Lagos State House of Assembly has advanced a bill to establish a new University of Medicine and Health Sciences.

A public hearing on the proposed legislation was held on Wednesday at the Lateef Jakande Auditorium within the Lagos House of Assembly complex. The session brought together key stakeholders, including medical professionals, academics, students, and traditional rulers, who contributed their views and suggestions on the initiative.

Presiding over the event, Deputy Speaker Hon. Lasbat Meranda highlighted the importance of public engagement in shaping the university, stressing that community input would ensure the institution’s sustainability and long-term impact.

Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Richard Kasunmu and Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education, Hon. Owolabi Ajani, assured attendees that all feedback from the hearing would be carefully reviewed and integrated into the final bill.

Clarifying the scope of the initiative, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, emphasized that the bill is not merely a renaming of the LASU College of Medicine (LASUCOM). Rather, it is aimed at creating a robust, multi-campus university capable of training and deploying skilled medical and health professionals across Lagos and beyond.

Honourable Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, underlined the urgent need for such an institution, citing the widening gap between the state’s growing population and the limited number of medical practitioners. He noted that local training through the new university would be pivotal in reducing the emigration of doctors and improving healthcare delivery throughout Lagos.

The public hearing was marked by active participation from a broad range of stakeholders, who presented memoranda and suggestions to guide the development of the new university. The Lagos State House of Assembly is expected to incorporate these insights as it finalizes the legislation, aiming to lay the foundation for a world-class medical institution in the state.
