One Feared Dead as Niger Youths Clash With State Traffic Agency Officials

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed that a violent confrontation between some youths and officials of the Niger State Traffic Management Agency (NISTMA) has resulted in the death of one person.

Police spokesperson SP Wasi’u Abiodun said the incident occurred on Monday, September 16, in Kasuwan-Gwari, following a distress call. According to him, NISTMA personnel had intercepted a motorcyclist carrying suspected vandalised iron, which led to an altercation during interrogation.

The situation quickly escalated as a group of scavengers and miscreants mobilised, attacking both NISTMA officials and Policemen. They reportedly damaged Police vehicles, barricaded the road, and set tyres on fire.

SP Abiodun noted that the Operation Flush Patrol Team from ‘A’ Division, who were already on routine patrol, intervened to restore order. Reinforcements were also deployed, and what the Police described as “minimum force” was applied to disperse the rioters and reopen the road.

So far, over 10 suspects have been arrested in connection with the unrest, and investigations are ongoing.

The Police Command has appealed for calm, assuring residents that law and order have been restored to the area.
