Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, Immediate Past Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, recently participated in the Africa Business Forum at Columbia University, hosted by the Africa Business Club in partnership with Nigerians in New York. Ahead of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York City, he engaged in a dynamic discussion with Daniel Jaiyeoba on the ease of doing business in Africa, the responsibilities of the diaspora, and the opportunities available for those willing to invest their talents and vision back home.
The conversation also explored the popular question of whether to “japa” or leave the continent, reframing it as a choice between escape and meaningful contribution. A standout moment occurred when Jaiyeoba, unusually for a moderator, ceded the floor to Tolani Alli, Professor Osinbajo’s Special Assistant, Personal Photographer, and Head of Content and Production. This gesture highlighted the essence of leadership—not as guarding the spotlight, but as empowering others to step forward and share their gifts.
The event was further enriched by the presence of notable Nigerians, including Dupe Olusola, former CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc; Tayo Oviosu, founder and Group CEO of Paga; and Tochi Wigwe, emphasizing the continued influence of Nigerians committed to learning, exchange, and national development.
Professor Osinbajo reflected that Africa’s promise extends beyond its resources or youthful energy, resting significantly on the collective willingness to mentor, share, and uplift one another. Moments like these reinforce the importance of returning to spaces of learning and engagement, where the story of Africa continues to be written collaboratively.
