The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has approved the construction of critical bridges and infrastructure in Yobe State as part of efforts to address recurring flooding and strengthen regional connectivity.
Acting on the directive of its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Goni Alkali, a technical team from the Commission, supported by engineering consultants, has begun comprehensive pre-construction assessments in flood-prone communities. Led by the NEDC State Coordinator, Prof. Ali Ibrahim Abbas, the team inspected damaged sites in Tarmuwa Local Government Area where floods last year devastated essential roads, bridges and culverts.
The intervention covers the construction of a 20-metre single-span bridge at Kaliyari and a 30-metre twin-span bridge at Jumbam, two strategic arteries linking Damaturu, the state capital, to the Yobe East Senatorial District and several northern local government areas including Bade, Yusufari, Karasuwa, Nguru and Machina. While temporary repairs by the Yobe State Government and FERMA restored access, the NEDC projects are designed to provide durable and sustainable solutions to the challenges of flooding that often disrupt travel, commerce and daily life.
Beyond road infrastructure, the NEDC team also inspected ongoing water projects in the state, including solar-powered boreholes in communities such as Dangel Lantewa, Madara Haugare, Babbangida Motor Park, Jumbam and Kolewa. Each facility is equipped with a 10,000-gallon overhead tank, dual fetching points and protective fencing, designed to ensure sustainability, affordability and efficient access to clean water.
Throughout the tour, the Commission emphasised adherence to technical standards and commended local communities for their resilience. It reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration with the Yobe State Government to enhance welfare and improve living conditions across the state.
