A prison inmate at the Okere Correctional Facility in Warri, Delta State, has died while receiving medical care at the Central Hospital, Warri. The late inmate, identified as David, was confirmed by Deputy Comptroller of Prisons, Richard Egbede, to have been HIV positive and reportedly refused to take his prescribed antiretroviral medications.

Comptroller Egbede clarified the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death, dismissing social media claims that prison authorities had neglected him. He explained that the custodial service consistently provided medical support throughout the inmate’s illness.

“We’ve been giving him drugs all the time, but he would just keep the drugs and not take them. About a month ago, when his condition worsened, we rushed him to Central Hospital, Warri, where he received treatment,” Egbede said. He added that the inmate was later discharged and returned to the facility with continued medical advice to take his medications.

Egbede noted that, prior to his passing, the inmate developed a mild fever, prompting staff to administer a drip while ensuring support from fellow inmates, who even contributed funds to assist with his hospital care. “His cell members were very cooperative,” Egbede said, emphasizing that the prison had acted responsibly and with care throughout the process.

The Deputy Comptroller’s statement underscores the challenges in ensuring adherence to treatment for inmates with chronic conditions, while reaffirming the commitment of prison authorities to provide medical care and support for all custodial inmates.
