In a landmark announcement, Premier Li Qiang of China declared that China will no longer claim access to Special and Differential Treatment (S&DT) in new World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements. The announcement was made during a high-level meeting convened by China on its Global Development Initiative at the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA).
The WTO Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, hailed the decision as a breakthrough in ongoing reform efforts, stressing that the move is the outcome of years of engagement and negotiation. She extended her gratitude to President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, Minister Wang Wentao, and the Chinese delegation for demonstrating global leadership.
“This is a culmination of many years of hard work, and I want to applaud China’s leadership on this issue,” Okonjo-Iweala stated.
The development is widely seen as a step toward rebalancing trade negotiations and strengthening trust among WTO members, particularly at a time when global trade rules are under pressure to adapt to shifting economic realities.
