The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Port Harcourt Operations Office, on Wednesday, 24th September 2025, conducted a capacity-building training for corps members serving as NEMA/NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards (EMVs) in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The training forms part of NEMA’s ongoing efforts to enhance grassroots disaster preparedness and equip young volunteers with the skills needed for community resilience and disaster risk reduction.

Facilitators, Mrs. Chieme Beauty and Mr. Tepikor ThankGod, delivered lectures covering NEMA’s history, statutory responsibilities, the principles of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and the specific roles of NYSC EMVs in community disaster management. They emphasized that EMVs act as extensions of NEMA’s outreach, creating awareness, sensitizing residents, and mobilizing preventive actions at the local level.

In the practical session, led by Mr. Felix Akakara, corps members were trained on Basic First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), fire safety, and water rescue techniques. Mr. Akakara urged participants to apply the skills in emergencies and actively promote a culture of preparedness in their communities.

The highly interactive session encouraged peer-to-peer learning, with corps members sharing experiences and insights on local challenges. Participants expressed appreciation for the training and pledged to use their newly acquired skills to sensitize communities, respond to emergencies, and support disaster awareness initiatives during their NYSC service.
