The Niger State Police Command has uncovered a major N4.8 billion theft at the Kainji Hydroelectric Power Plant, resulting in the arrest of 12 security staff from Mainstream Energy Solutions, the facility’s operators.
Police spokesman Superintendent Wasi'u Abiodun confirmed that the suspects were involved in stealing navigation lock metals and beams valued at N4.8 billion from the plant. The case was first reported to the New-Bussa Division on August 11 and subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna.
Investigations revealed that the suspects vandalized navigation lock gates and equipment, cutting the metals into sizes and transporting them by truck under the cover of night between 2023 and 2025.
Two primary suspects, 35-year-old Shaibu Abu Sufyan and 31-year-old Ibrahim Musa, both from New-Bussa, were initially arrested. Sufyan later confessed to his involvement and named ten other accomplices, including Zayyanu Musa, Jibrin Abdullahi, Hassan Musa, Micah Adamu, Attahiru Umar, Abdulrahman Usman, Ismaila Ibrahim, Mubarak Husseini, Adamu Abubakar, and Abdullahi Abubakar (a.k.a Zuma).
Further investigations uncovered suspicious transactions totaling over 24 million Naira between the suspects and a scrap dealer believed to be a major collaborator in the theft. Police say inquiries are ongoing as efforts continue to track down the identified scrap dealers.
