An Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo has sentenced a dismissed Nigerian Army soldier, Corporal Stephen Iweh of the 6 Battalion, Ibagwa in Abak, to death by hanging for the murder of 42-year-old Christopher Enobong Jimmy.

The tragic incident occurred on May 23, 2021, along the East-West Road in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area. Justice Nkanang convicted Iweh on three counts: murder, armed robbery, and unlawful possession of firearms.

According to court records, Christopher Jimmy, a clearing and forwarding company manager based in Port Harcourt, had offered Corporal Iweh a lift from Trailer Park in Onne, Rivers State, to Ikot Abasi. However, along the journey at Oboro Junction, Ikot Abasi, the soldier fatally shot him before fleeing with his Grey Toyota Matrix car and other valuables.

Investigations revealed that Iweh, a 39-year-old father of three, had illegally kept an AK-47 rifle, which he admitted to having “picked at Dambou, Borno State in 2018 and decided to keep as personal arms.” He was later tracked to Andy Guest House in Ukanafun, far from the crime scene, where he was arrested and the rifle recovered.

The court sentenced him to death by hanging for murder, death by hanging for armed robbery, and 10 years’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of firearms.

The late Christopher Jimmy is survived by his widow, Arit, aged 34, who tearfully told the court that her husband had travelled from Port Harcourt to Ikot Abasi to visit his sister but never returned.
