Nigeria has once again strengthened its position in global aviation after being re-elected into Part 2 of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada. The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who confirmed that the country polled 163 votes out of 185 eligible member states, securing its place alongside 11 other nations, including Egypt and South Africa from the African continent.

Keyamo, who led Nigeria’s delegation to the voting sessions, described the outcome as a moment of pride, noting that the country’s representative to ICAO, Engr. Mahmoud Ben-Tukur, will continue to occupy Nigeria’s seat on the council. The minister said the re-election demonstrates the confidence of the international aviation community in Nigeria’s commitment to global air transport safety, security, and development.

This latest victory comes at a time when Nigeria’s aviation industry is seeking greater international visibility following years of infrastructural challenges, safety concerns, and operational setbacks. The re-election not only places Nigeria in a stronger position to influence international aviation policies but also offers opportunities to further collaborate with leading nations in strengthening aviation safety standards and promoting sustainable air transport.

Analysts believe that retaining a seat on ICAO’s council is crucial for Nigeria as it continues its efforts to modernize airports, expand safety oversight systems, and attract foreign investment into the aviation sector. With the global aviation industry undergoing major transitions, including digital transformation and climate adaptation, Nigeria’s presence on the council could help shape decisions that directly impact Africa’s airspace and connectivity.
