The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed shock and outrage over the abduction of one of its young members, Onyesom Peace Udoka, and her sister, who were reportedly kidnapped along the Lokoja–Okene road in Kogi State while returning from the recent Call to Bar Ceremony in Abuja.
In a statement signed by NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the association described the incident as tragic, unacceptable, and deeply condemnable. The NBA said it was particularly heartbreaking that at a time when the country should be celebrating the entry of young lawyers into the profession, such families are instead forced to endure harrowing ordeals at the hands of criminals.
“No family should have to endure this trauma, and no citizen should live under the constant fear of insecurity on our roads,” the statement read.
The association called on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, to act with urgency to secure the immediate and safe release of Udoka, her sister, and all others currently held in captivity. It stressed that the protection of citizens is the primary responsibility of government, warning that the recurring insecurity across highways must no longer be treated with levity.
The NBA also demanded intensified and sustained efforts to restore safety on Nigeria’s roads, urging the authorities to adopt decisive measures that will rebuild public confidence in the government’s ability to guarantee security.
While expressing solidarity with the families of the abducted victims, the NBA prayed for their safe and speedy return.
