Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been awarded the prestigious title of Honorary Fellow by Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge. The announcement was made following a ceremony presided over by the President of the College, Professor Dame Madeleine Atkins, which also featured an engaging dialogue on global challenges with Foreign Editor of the Financial Times, Alec Russell.

Okonjo-Iweala expressed gratitude to the college, acknowledging the support of Professor Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger and other members of the institution who facilitated the honour. She described the event as both fun and solemn, noting that it provided a platform to reflect on pressing international issues, including the emerging complexities of what has been termed the “New World Disorder.”

The recognition adds to Okonjo-Iweala’s growing list of international accolades, highlighting her long-standing contributions to global economic governance, development finance, and trade policy. Observers say the award also underscores the increasing influence of African leaders in shaping global discussions on trade, development, and international cooperation.
