Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to steady and impactful development in the state, emphasizing resilience despite structural challenges. Speaking through his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, at an inter-denominational church service commemorating Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary and Bayelsa’s 29th creation anniversary, the Governor noted that the state’s limited number of local government areas has historically constrained federal resource allocation.

Despite these limitations, Governor Diri highlighted several strides under his leadership, notably the recent procurement of a 60-megawatt gas turbine expected to deliver 24-hour power by December. He described this as a turning point that will improve residents’ quality of life, attract investors, and stimulate economic growth. “Once there is light, there is hope. We believe that with this development, more investors will come in. So, we may not be where we ought to be, but we are certainly not where we used to be,” he said.

The announcement has sparked positive reactions among residents and business communities. Many expressed optimism that reliable power will reduce production costs, attract investments, and create employment opportunities. Traders and small business owners noted that uninterrupted electricity would significantly improve productivity and reduce reliance on expensive private generators. Social media users also hailed the initiative as a major step toward economic revival and industrial growth in Bayelsa.

Experts have highlighted the potential macroeconomic impact of the development. Dr. Emeka Nwosu, an energy analyst, stated that the addition of 60 megawatts of stable electricity could boost industrial output and enhance investor confidence, not only in Bayelsa but in the broader Niger Delta region. Professor Grace Ologun, a development economist, emphasized that increased electricity supply will lower operational costs for businesses, improve the ease of doing business, and stimulate sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, and services. She noted that such infrastructure projects can create a multiplier effect, generating jobs, increasing local consumption, and attracting further private-sector investment.

The service also featured a sermon highlighting the resilience of Bayelsa people and the state’s growth potential despite socio-economic obstacles. Intercessory prayers for peace and progress in Bayelsa State, the Niger Delta region, and the nation concluded the event, reinforcing the shared aspiration for development and stability.
