The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has officially flagged off the “Light Up Abuja Project”, a transformative initiative aimed at providing uninterrupted integrated hybrid solar lighting across districts and expressways in the nation’s capital.

Speaking during the ceremony in Abuja, Wike said the project is designed not only to enhance security but also to improve the city’s aesthetic appeal as Abuja prepares to mark its 50th anniversary in February 2026. He described the initiative as a landmark step that would change the face of the FCT within seven months.

“Anybody coming to Abuja will not only see good roads, but the entire place lit up. The hybrid solar system also comes with surveillance features to quickly detect and deter vandals or criminals,” Wike stated, stressing that a well-lit Abuja is crucial for national pride, security, and development.

The Minister recalled that on assumption of office, nearly 80 percent of the FCT was in darkness at night, fueling insecurity. He blamed the situation on poorly managed maintenance contracts awarded to political contractors, which consumed huge resources without visible results. To break the cycle, the FCT Administration struck new agreements during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2024 investment mission to Beijing, securing partnerships with Chinese Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC) and the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

Under the new arrangement, the companies will handle the full maintenance of the streetlight system for four to five years, eliminating the costly practice of perpetual maintenance contracts. Wike noted that while the project may face resistance from vested interests, including former contractors and saboteurs who thrived in the darkness, the Administration remains resolute.

“This work must be done, and with the support of Mr. President, we will deliver,” he affirmed.

The Light Up Abuja Project is expected to drastically reduce vandalism, improve safety for residents, and significantly boost the capital’s global image as it enters a new era of urban development.
