The University of Port Harcourt has announced a complete ban on the customary “sign-out” activities traditionally observed by final-year students. The directive, effective from October 2, 2025, seeks to regulate post-examination behaviour and maintain order on campus.

In a statement released by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. C. C. Wokocha, the university explicitly prohibited practices such as signing on T-shirts, parading with security escorts, and holding gatherings by final-year students after completing their examinations. Parents and guardians were also advised not to gather at examination venues, as part of measures to minimize disruptions and ensure campus security.

Prof. Wokocha emphasized that any student or group found violating the directive will be referred to the Students Disciplinary Committee, which will enforce appropriate sanctions. The management also warned that photographers or vendors facilitating sign-out activities by setting up platforms for T-shirt signing or other celebrations would face arrest.

The university management explained that the ban is aimed at fostering a conducive academic environment while ensuring the safety and security of students and staff. The decision reflects the institution’s commitment to enforcing discipline and upholding its rules and regulations.

“This directive is in line with the university’s policy of ensuring a safe, orderly, and academically focused environment. Students are reminded that the final examinations are a period for concentration, and the management will not tolerate any acts that could compromise safety or academic integrity,” the statement read.

The announcement has prompted mixed reactions among students and parents. While some students expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the long-standing tradition, others acknowledged the need to adhere to university regulations for the safety and well-being of the campus community.

University authorities urged all stakeholders to cooperate fully with the directive to avoid disciplinary actions and ensure that the academic calendar proceeds smoothly. The management reaffirmed its commitment to creating a secure and supportive learning environment for all students.
