The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to leveraging the State’s waterways for innovation, growth, and long-term prosperity through the development of a sustainable blue economy.
Speaking at the African Blue Economy Summit: Lagos 2025, themed “Harnessing Africa’s Blue Natural Capital for Sustainable Growth”, held at Azuri Towers, Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized Lagos’ unique position to lead Africa in sustainable marine development. He highlighted ongoing investments in water transport, maritime infrastructure, and climate adaptation initiatives as part of the State’s long-term vision integrating sustainability with economic growth.
The Governor further noted that the E1 Lagos GP championship, currently hosted in Lagos, would serve as a platform to foster innovation, entertainment, technology, and leadership while promoting climate-conscious ecosystems.
Speaking at the summit, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the event as a vital opportunity to harness Africa’s marine resources for inclusive economic growth. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to community-driven climate initiatives and strategic infrastructure development aimed at optimizing the State’s waterways for investment and maritime innovation.
The summit also featured remarks from global stakeholders, including Didier Drogba, President of the Didier Drogba Foundation and former Chelsea striker, who hailed Lagos’ hosting of the E1 Lagos GP as a milestone for Africa. Drogba stressed the importance of technology, entertainment, and innovation in transforming youth engagement and economic opportunities.
Alejandro Agag, co-Founder and Chairman of the E1 Series, praised Lagos for its efficiency in hosting the electric boat racing competition, noting that the event marked the beginning of significant developments for sustainable transportation in Nigeria.
Key participants, including the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Omotenioye Majekodunmi, highlighted initiatives in mangrove restoration, climate resilience, and strategic investment for maritime infrastructure. The summit underscored Lagos’ growing reputation as a hub for sustainability, innovation, and global partnerships, positioning the State at the forefront of Africa’s blue economy agenda.
