A Chinese power generation firm, CCETC, has announced plans to establish a 3MW power plant and an industrial park in Ogun State, highlighting potential interventions in the state’s ongoing electricity supply challenges. The announcement came during a weekend meeting with Governor Dapo Abiodun at the Governor’s office in Abeokuta.
Chairman of CCETC, Mr. Guo Xianda, said the company intends to install the power facility at the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, Iperu-Ilishan, at no cost, with the goal of supporting industrial and economic activities in the area. The proposed industrial park aims to attract manufacturing companies, particularly from China, leveraging the improved power infrastructure.
CCETC has existing operations in Nigeria totaling over 250MW and maintains a capacity exceeding 5,000MW across Africa. The company’s proposal for Ogun State includes power generation, a dedicated transmission network, and the industrial park, designed to complement state-level energy and infrastructure planning.
Governor Abiodun’s administration has cited electricity supply as a major factor affecting industrial growth in Ogun State. Despite ongoing projects with private operators such as Sahara Power and Powergen, energy access remains inconsistent, with frequent voltage fluctuations and outages impacting businesses and residential areas. Analysts note that a 3MW facility would provide localized relief but would need to be integrated into broader grid and transmission improvements to have a lasting effect.
The Governor indicated that the CCETC team would tour ongoing distribution and power projects within the state to assess how the new plant could complement existing infrastructure. According to officials, the initiative aligns with the state’s broader investment drive and ongoing efforts to improve industrial competitiveness and energy reliability.
Nigeria’s power sector continues to face systemic challenges, including generation deficits, transmission constraints, and regulatory hurdles. Experts caution that while private-sector interventions like CCETC’s are important, the overall impact on Ogun State’s industrial sector will depend on coordination with national grid operators, infrastructure maintenance, and consistent power supply policies.
The proposed projects could provide a boost to local manufacturing and agro-industrial activities if successfully implemented and integrated into the state’s existing energy framework.
