The Akwa Ibom State Government has dismissed as false and politically motivated, reports circulating online that security details assigned to former Governor Udom Emmanuel and other past leaders of the state have been withdrawn.
The Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, made the clarification while responding to journalists’ inquiries on Saturday night, describing the story as “a baseless fabrication aimed at misleading the public.”
This development comes amid a series of social media claims suggesting that the current administration had ordered the withdrawal of security aides attached to former governors — a narrative that has occasionally surfaced in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape whenever transitions of power occur.
Umanah, who has served in previous administrations and understands the dynamics of such controversies, stated firmly that the deployment, reassignment, or withdrawal of police personnel remains the exclusive prerogative of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the State Commissioner of Police, not the Governor.
“I can tell you on good authority that the Governor did not issue any directive to withdraw security operatives from the immediate past Governor,” Umanah said, adding that all former governors of Akwa Ibom continue to enjoy the full complement of their security details as stipulated by law.
He also noted that no formal complaint had been received from any of the affected individuals or their media aides, describing the story as a creation of “those peddling political propaganda.”
The Commissioner urged the public to disregard what he termed “baseless rumours,” emphasizing that Governor Umo Eno’s administration remains focused on sustaining peace, unity, and good governance across the state.
“The Governor is committed to ensuring that all citizens, regardless of political background, continue to enjoy full protection and the benefits of the law,” Umanah assured.
Observers familiar with Akwa Ibom politics recall that similar rumours have often been used to create tension between past and present administrations. However, the latest clarification appears to have put the matter to rest.
