In a strategic push to enhance food security and strengthen local agricultural production, the Lagos State Agricultural Input Supply Authority (LAISA) has trained over 500 farmers and fishermen in the Ikorodu Division. The one-day session, held on Tuesday at the Ikorodu Local Government premises, focused on equipping participants with innovative farming and fishing techniques tailored to local conditions.

The program reflects a growing recognition within Lagos State that food security extends beyond agriculture, impacting economic stability, public health, and urban resilience. In her keynote address, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, highlighted the need for quality agricultural inputs and modern practices to maximize limited resources. Represented by Mrs. Aramide Gansalo, Director of Agribusiness, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, the Commissioner emphasized that access to certified seeds, fertilizers, and modern implements is critical for farmers and fishermen to increase productivity.

Mrs. Olufolake Oluyemi, General Manager of LAISA, described the training as more than a technical session, positioning it as a platform for engagement, dialogue, and co-creation of solutions. She noted that challenges differ across Lagos’ divisions, and the forum allows the authority to listen to local producers’ needs while providing practical guidance on modern techniques. The theme, “Harvesting Success: Innovative Solutions for Lagos Farmers,” underscores the state’s commitment to bridging gaps between policy and practice.

Farmers and fishermen present expressed optimism about the initiative. Mr. Femi Oke, Chairman of the All Nigerian Farmers Association, Lagos State Chapter, commended LAISA for its focus on practical support and encouraged participants to apply the skills learned to increase yields and profitability.

The event drew participation from notable local leaders, including Hon. Abdul Lateef Ladega, Chairman of Ikorodu North Local Government; Mr. Emmanuel Audu, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems; and Alhaji Folorunsho Alogba, Babaloja General of Ikorodu. Their presence highlighted the importance of community-level collaboration in translating training programs into tangible results for local producers.

Observers familiar with Lagos’ agricultural landscape note that initiatives like these are essential in areas such as Ikorodu, where urban expansion and limited farmland make innovative practices and effective input management critical to sustaining local food systems. LAISA’s focus on direct engagement signals a shift from top-down interventions to community-driven solutions, aiming to boost both productivity and resilience among Lagos State farmers and fishermen.
