The Federal Fire Service (FFS) on Wednesday successfully contained a massive fire outbreak that gutted a two-storey commercial building in Utako, Abuja, leaving six people injured and millions of naira worth of property destroyed.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in the early hours of the day, spreading rapidly through the structure before the arrival of the firefighters, who immediately launched a full-scale operation to stop the flames from extending to nearby buildings.
The National Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service, DCF P.O. Abraham, confirmed that six male victims, aged between 25 and 57, sustained varying degrees of burns and injuries and were quickly evacuated to hospitals for medical treatment.
In a dramatic turn, a baby was thrown from a balcony by a panicked resident attempting to escape the flames. The infant was miraculously caught by bystanders, avoiding what could have been a tragic fall. The Fire Service, however, warned against such risky acts, urging residents to remain calm and follow safety protocols during emergencies.
Preliminary assessments indicate that property worth about ₦45 million was lost, while the prompt response of the Fire Service saved assets valued at over ₦705 million.
Officials have launched an investigation to determine the actual cause of the fire, which remains unknown at the time of filing this report.
The Service called on Nigerians to be vigilant and ensure strict adherence to fire safety measures, especially in commercial and residential buildings.
“The Federal Fire Service urges members of the public to remain calm, report fire outbreaks immediately, and adhere to safety precautions at all times,” DCF Abraham stated.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of timely response and community cooperation during emergencies, as the Service continues to intensify awareness campaigns across the country.
