Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has given AITEO Exploration and Production Company Limited operating in Nembe Local Government Area a one-month ultimatum to remit funds owed to Bassambiri community as part of ongoing peace-building efforts. The directive was issued on Wednesday during the 173rd session of the State Executive Council at Government House, Yenagoa, when the Opu Nembe (Bassambiri) Peace Steering Committee submitted its report on the protracted crisis in the community.
Governor Diri commended the panel, chaired by former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Victor Ombu (rtd), for their role in restoring peace and stressed that Bassambiri’s decades-long conflicts among residents must end. He called on all stakeholders to embrace unity, peace, and development, urging AITEO to comply with the administration’s earlier directive and remit all outstanding funds to the Peace Steering Committee within one month.
The governor also assured that the committee’s recommendations would be implemented. He directed the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure to assess the construction of a link road in the community and submit a report within two weeks. In addition, Governor Diri warned residents of Bayelsa West senatorial district against early political campaigns and cautioned his appointees against inciting the polity through calumny.
Admiral Ombu expressed gratitude to the governor for allowing the committee to operate independently and in an atmosphere of civility. The panel recommended measures including enhanced security presence, road construction linking the Unity Bridge, adherence to election conditions, promulgation of a kingdom-wide constitution, ensuring oil companies meet their corporate social responsibilities, and promoting freedom of association and choice within the community.
