IKEJA, Lagos — The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that health facilities across Lagos deliver quality, ethical, and patient-centred services, while urging residents to actively participate in protecting their healthcare rights.
The position was highlighted during a one-day Sensitisation Campaign and Town Hall Meeting themed “The Roles and Responsibilities of HEFAMAA in Lagos State”, held on Tuesday at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat.
In her remarks, Dr. Abiola Idowu, Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, represented by Mrs. Oladunni Omonike Olutola, Deputy Director of Health Education, stressed that the agency’s mission goes beyond regulating hospitals, emphasizing citizen empowerment in healthcare.
“Every patient has the right to be treated with respect, to understand the treatment being administered, and to be fully informed about their care,” Idowu said.
“Mutual respect between patients and caregivers is vital to achieving positive health outcomes.”
She noted that while the Lagos State Government continues to invest heavily in infrastructure and personnel training, the success of these efforts depends on the attitude and commitment of frontline health workers.
Also addressing participants, Mr. Richard Olusanya, Chief Nutrition Officer at HEFAMAA, outlined the agency’s regulatory framework, explaining that it monitors and accredits both public and private health facilities to ensure compliance with medical, environmental, and staffing standards.
“Our mandate is to ensure that only qualified personnel manage health facilities. Biannual inspections and QR code verification systems are in place to promote transparency and public trust,” Olusanya said.
The QR code system allows Lagos residents to verify facility authenticity, access owner information, and submit feedback directly to HEFAMAA, enhancing accountability and reducing quackery.
The meeting, attended by community leaders, health workers, and local government representatives, forms part of HEFAMAA’s ongoing outreach initiative aimed at deepening public understanding and fostering a culture of accountability in Lagos State’s healthcare sector.
