Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting clemency to Maryam Sanda, who was convicted in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.

Reacting to the development, Sowore described the decision as unjust and a reflection of double standards in Nigeria’s justice system. He alleged that Sanda’s release was influenced by political and personal connections, calling it an abuse of executive privilege.

In a statement shared via his official platform, Sowore said:

“Tinubu frees Maryam Sanda, a woman convicted in 2020 for the murder of her husband. A convicted murderer gets clemency because of connection, yet Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has never been convicted of any crime, continues to rot in detention while awaiting a sham trial.”

Sowore further condemned what he called the selective application of justice, asserting that the government’s action undermines public trust in the judiciary and rule of law.

He urged the Federal Government to demonstrate fairness by granting freedom to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has remained in custody despite several court rulings ordering his release.

The activist reiterated his call for judicial reform and an end to the politicization of justice, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy cannot thrive when justice is applied based on influence and affiliation.
