Abuja – Activist and political commentator Omoyele Sowore has intensified his campaign for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, ahead of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow march to Aso Rock Villa, scheduled for October 20. Speaking via his X (Twitter) account, Sowore revealed that he has been engaging key Nigerian leaders to seek justice and facilitate dialogue on the matter.

Earlier this week, Sowore reached out separately to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, and his Deputy, Benjamin Kalu, requesting that the House convene an urgent plenary session to issue a formal resolution calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release Kanu immediately. The Speaker, however, declined to officially table the matter, citing ongoing court proceedings. Despite this, Dr. Abbas assured Sowore that he would meet privately with selected lawmakers, including Obi Aguocha, Kanu’s constituency representative, to explore possible political resolutions. He also noted that he had previously engaged the Department of State Services (DSS) behind the scenes regarding Kanu’s detention.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, while acknowledging ongoing conversations with President Tinubu concerning Kanu’s release, noted that the judicial process has been slow and frustrating. Sowore interpreted this as an indication that some officials may be using the court proceedings as an alibi to avoid taking direct action.

In addition to federal-level engagement, Sowore has reached out to members of the Abia State House of Assembly to confirm whether they will participate in the October 20 protest upon their return from a current trip to London. Despite their earlier public commitment to join the march, he has yet to receive a response.

Sowore emphasized that the October 20 date remains fixed, describing it as sacrosanct. He reaffirmed that the march will be conducted lawfully, powerfully, and resolutely, with the aim of demanding justice and the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

He also noted that President Tinubu is scheduled to travel to Rome ahead of the march. While it is unclear whether this move is intended to avoid the protest, Sowore expressed hope that the president would return in time to witness the full force of public demonstration and the collective will of Nigerians demanding justice.

The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow march has already attracted nationwide attention, with organizers asserting that it will be peaceful and lawful, emphasizing civic engagement and democratic principles as the foundation of their advocacy.
