NDPC CEO Dr. Vincent Olatunji Engages Traditional Rulers on Data Protection

Lagos, October 13, 2025 — The National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has called on traditional rulers across Nigeria to take an active role in raising awareness about data protection and privacy in their communities. Speaking at the National Executive Committee Meeting of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) in Lagos, Dr. Olatunji emphasized that effective grassroots sensitization must start with these influential community leaders.

The forum, declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) through his representative, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, provided a platform for discussions on the importance of protecting personal data and empowering citizens to understand their rights under the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA), 2023.

In his presentation titled, “Data Protection and Privacy: Overview of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDPA),” Dr. Olatunji guided traditional rulers through the fundamentals of data protection, outlining both the rights of individuals and the responsibilities of data controllers and processors. He also shared ongoing initiatives by the NDPC to educate Nigerians, including translating the NDPA into local languages to make it more accessible.

Highlighting opportunities for Nigerian youths within the data protection ecosystem, Dr. Olatunji underscored the pivotal role of traditional rulers in community advocacy, capacity building, and the effective dissemination of information on the Act. He encouraged rulers to lead efforts in ensuring compliance at the grassroots level.

The event was attended by several governors, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos State), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Senator Bassey Otu (Cross River), Dr. Dikko Umar Radda (Katsina), Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Alhaji Usman Ododo (Kogi), Dr. Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), and Hon. Mai Mala Buni (Yobe).

Prominent traditional rulers were also present, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji (Dr) Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, Chairman of the NCTRN, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Co-Chairman of the Council. The gathering highlighted the critical partnership between government agencies and traditional institutions in promoting awareness of legal frameworks and safeguarding citizens’ rights in Nigeria.
