The Nigerian Army Headquarters, 32 Artillery Brigade, has pledged to ensure a transparent and expedited disciplinary process against a soldier implicated in the death of a commercial bus driver in Akunu, Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, October 13, 2025, when the bus driver, who was traveling from Akure to Abuja, experienced a mechanical fault near a military checkpoint in Akunu. According to reports, the passengers became agitated and demanded a refund of their transport fares. In an attempt to intervene, one of the passengers reportedly sought help from a soldier stationed at the checkpoint to retrieve the money from the driver.
Upon arriving at the scene, the soldier allegedly engaged the driver in an argument that escalated into a physical altercation. The Army confirmed that the soldier’s behavior was “uncouth and unprofessional,” and in clear violation of the Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct governing military operations at checkpoints.
When the 32 Artillery Brigade Headquarters was alerted about the situation, officers promptly evacuated the injured driver to a nearby medical facility. The Army said it covered all medical expenses and assigned an officer to stay with the victim throughout his treatment. The driver was initially treated in Akoko, before being referred to the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure, and later to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where he sadly passed away on Monday, October 14, 2025.
In a statement signed by Major Njoka Irabor, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the Army expressed deep regret and sympathy to the family of the deceased, assuring the public that the erring soldier would face the full weight of military and civil justice. The Army further promised to make the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings public once concluded.
The Brigade has since paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased as well as to the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ondo State. During the visit, Army officials promised to take responsibility for the burial expenses and to provide welfare support to ensure the late driver’s children continue their education without disruption.
Major Irabor stated that a liaison officer has been assigned to remain in touch with the family throughout the burial process and follow-up support. He also disclosed that the Ondo State Government has commended the Army’s handling of the matter and pledged its support to the family, especially in the area of the children’s welfare.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining discipline, professionalism, and accountability in all its operations while ensuring that justice is served promptly and transparently.
