Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has revealed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) allegedly withheld $500,000 meant for players who helped the country qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Oliseh made the disclosure while reflecting on events surrounding Nigeria’s qualification campaign, claiming that the NFF received $1 million from FIFA as part of the qualification reward but failed to honour an agreement to share the money equally with the players.

According to him, an understanding was reached for the players to receive $500,000, while the remaining half would go to the federation. However, shortly after the funds were received, the NFF reportedly disbanded the team to avoid paying the agreed amount.

“FIFA gave Nigeria $1 million for qualifying for the World Cup, and we agreed with the NFF to share it 50-50,” Oliseh said. “The next thing the NFF did was to disband the team and keep the money.”

The former midfielder, who captained Nigeria during the qualifiers, described the incident as one of the most disappointing moments in his international career, highlighting what he called a pattern of disregard for players’ welfare by football authorities.

Oliseh’s revelation has reignited conversations around accountability and transparency within Nigerian football administration.
