Amnesty International has expressed deep concern over the continued wave of violence and killings in northern Nigeria, condemning the government’s failure to protect rural communities from persistent gunmen attacks.
In a statement issued on Friday, the organization detailed a series of deadly assaults carried out this week across Plateau, Kaduna, and Zamfara States, which have left dozens dead and many others kidnapped.
According to the report, 13 persons were killed on Tuesday during separate attacks on Rachas village in Heipang District and Rawuru village in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State.
Similarly, on Friday around 4:00 p.m., armed men struck again, killing at least nine people in Layin Danauta Kuyello, Birnin Gwari LGA of Kaduna State. During the raid, several residents were reportedly abducted, while shops and homes were looted.
The rights organization further revealed that eight persons were killed in an ambush on the Funtua–Gusau Road, while dozens of worshippers were abducted from a mosque in Maradawa, Gusau LGA of Zamfara State, during early morning prayers.
Amnesty International criticized the federal government’s repeated assurances of security improvement, stating that the killings have continued unchecked despite presidential directives to security agencies.
“The President claims to have repeatedly tasked security agencies to end the killing so that rural communities in some parts of northern Nigeria can go to bed with their eyes closed, but clearly nothing has changed,”
the statement read.
The group further faulted the security forces for their slow or absent response to distress warnings, stressing that no perpetrators have been brought to justice, leaving communities “completely exposed and disillusioned.”
“In addition to the security forces’ failure to heed warnings or respond in time to save lives, the fact that no perpetrators have been brought to justice leaves rural communities feeling completely exposed,”
Amnesty stated.
Amnesty International emphasized that the government bears the constitutional and moral obligation to protect all citizens and uphold the right to life.
“The rising death toll in the north of Nigeria shows just how badly the authorities are failing in this responsibility,”
the organization concluded.
