Residents of Jato-Aka, in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, have called for a transparent investigation into the September 30, 2025 incident that resulted in the deaths of several civilians, including a local youth leader identified as Iorsuur and a number of students.
According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation occurred during a military operation in the Ugbe community area. Community sources claim that troops opened fire amid confusion, leading to the fatalities. The Nigerian Army has not yet issued an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Locals described Iorsuur as a well-known community volunteer who had previously taken part in local self-help security efforts against bandit attacks. His death, they said, has deepened anxiety among residents already coping with frequent clashes in parts of Turan district.
Civil-society groups and traditional leaders have urged both the Benue State Government and the Nigerian Army Headquarters to launch a fact-finding mission to establish what transpired and to ensure accountability if any misconduct occurred.
Meanwhile, humanitarian agencies report that several displaced persons from surrounding communities have sought refuge in Jato-Aka and adjoining villages, calling for greater protection and relief assistance.
As of press time, security authorities were yet to release official casualty figures or confirm whether an internal investigation is underway.
