The Delta State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda, has intensified its offensive against crime across the state, recording two major breakthroughs in recent days — the interception of a large cache of ammunition and the arrest of a suspected drug baron operating in the Warri axis.

In a decisive operation on October 16, 2025, operatives from the ‘C’ Division, Asaba, led by CSP Ogbe Emmanuel, intercepted a Toyota Hiace Hummer Bus with registration number NGK 16 XB during a stop-and-search operation at the Head Bridge, Asaba. The driver, Ozoemenam Sylvanus, reportedly appeared nervous during questioning, prompting officers to conduct a detailed search. What they discovered left little doubt about the scale of the illicit cargo — 400 live cartridges carefully concealed within the bus and bound for Edo State.

According to police sources, the suspect initially attempted to mislead officers, claiming the packages contained padlocks. However, when the parcels were opened, the truth was exposed. Sylvanus was immediately arrested, and the ammunition seized as evidence. Police say an investigation is underway to trace the origin of the cartridges and dismantle the criminal network behind the operation.

Just days earlier, on October 10, 2025, another operation by the Orerokpe Division led to the arrest of Onos Afokoghene, a 37-year-old alleged drug dealer known for distributing hard drugs across Warri and nearby communities. Acting on credible intelligence, the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Paul Oboware, led his team to a hotspot in Jeddo Community, where Afokoghene and others were reportedly selling and consuming narcotics.

Upon sighting the police, the suspects tried to flee, but Afokoghene was apprehended after a brief pursuit. A search of the area uncovered a significant haul of illicit substances, including 3kg of Canadian Loud, 10kg of Indian Hemp, 24 litres of “monkey tail” (weed soaked in dry gin), several sachets of Tramadol, and two POS machines suspected to have been used for drug transactions.

Speaking on the twin operations, CP Abaniwonda reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to rid Delta State of criminal elements and safeguard the lives of residents. He commended the vigilance of his officers and urged citizens to continue partnering with the police by providing credible intelligence to aid ongoing efforts.

“The safety and security of Delta residents remain our top priority,” Abaniwonda said. “We will continue to act decisively against anyone threatening the peace of our state. We encourage residents to remain law-abiding, stay vigilant, and report suspicious activities to our distress line: 08036684974.”

The Commissioner’s statement, signed by SP Bright Edafe, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, was issued on October 19, 2025, in Asaba.
