President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to his longtime friend and political ally, Senator Abu Ibrahim, as the Katsina South lawmaker turns 80. In a heartfelt message, President Tinubu described Senator Ibrahim as more than a friend, calling him a brother and emphasizing the depth of their political and personal bond that began in the Senate chambers in 1992 during Nigeria’s aborted Third Republic.
Senator Ibrahim, who represented Katsina South under the defunct National Republican Convention, and President Tinubu, who represented Lagos West under the defunct Social Democratic Party, have maintained a friendship rooted in shared ideals of justice, democracy, and nation-building. Tinubu highlighted Ibrahim’s steadfast commitment to democracy, progressive politics, and the development of Katsina State, noting that his re-elections in 2003 and 2011 reflect the trust and confidence of his constituents.
The President recalled Senator Ibrahim’s courage during the struggle against military dictatorship, particularly after the 1993 annulment of the June 12 election, when Ibrahim stood firm in advocating for the release of detained senators. He also praised Ibrahim’s pivotal role in the formation and consolidation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013 and his ongoing support for the Renewed Hope Agenda since Tinubu assumed office in 2023.
“Abu is a principled statesman and trusted ally whose wisdom, loyalty, and service to Nigeria have inspired many,” President Tinubu stated. He further thanked Senator Ibrahim for his unwavering support on the campaign trail and for consistently providing valuable guidance in government affairs.
The President concluded by joining Senator Ibrahim’s family, friends, and associates in praying for his continued health, strength, and service to the nation.
