Gyeongju, South Korea —Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, joined global trade and foreign ministers at the APEC Foreign and Trade Ministers’ Dinner in Gyeongju, South Korea, where discussions focused on strengthening economic partnerships and promoting sustainable trade across the Asia-Pacific region.
The dinner, hosted by Korea’s Minister of Trade, Yeo Han-koo, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cho Hyun, brought together leading policymakers for an evening of informal dialogue in a relaxed and cordial atmosphere.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala described the gathering as a valuable opportunity to interact with colleagues beyond formal sessions, emphasizing the importance of open engagement in addressing shared global trade challenges, from supply chain disruptions to digital transformation.
“It was a chance to exchange views informally with colleagues — Trade and Foreign Ministers — in a more convivial atmosphere,” she shared in a post after the event.
During the evening, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala held a side meeting with Thailand’s Minister of Commerce, H.E. Suphajee Suthumpun, to discuss collaboration on digital trade and inclusive economic policies. She also met with Chile’s Under-Secretary for International Economic Relations, H.E. Claudia Sanhueza, focusing on sustainable growth and regional integration within the APEC framework.
The event highlighted the shared commitment of APEC economies to deepen cooperation and promote fair, transparent, and resilient trade systems amid ongoing global uncertainties.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s participation reaffirmed the WTO’s active engagement with regional economic blocs and its continued efforts to strengthen partnerships that foster global prosperity.
