Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has arrived in Belém, Brazil, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 30th Session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), hosted in the capital city of Pará State, deep in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon.
The global summit, convened by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (@LulaOficial) in collaboration with international development partners, brings together world leaders, business executives, and policymakers under the theme “Climate Action and Implementation.” Discussions at this year’s session are centered on adaptation, forests, biodiversity, and climate justice—key pillars for achieving sustainable environmental solutions.
According to official sources, Vice President Shettima’s engagements will commence with the general plenary of world leaders, where he is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national address on climate action. His statement will reaffirm the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy, and safeguarding vulnerable communities from the effects of climate change.
In addition, the Vice President is scheduled to participate in the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund, an initiative aimed at supporting conservation and sustainable forest management across tropical regions. He will also join a high-level roundtable on Climate and Nature, chaired by President Lula, alongside other global leaders and environmental advocates.
The day’s activities will conclude with an Amazonian Cocktail Reception for Heads of Delegation, hosted by President Lula da Silva, providing an opportunity for bilateral discussions and international cooperation on climate initiatives.
COP30 is expected to further consolidate global commitments toward achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, particularly as nations accelerate efforts to transition toward a low-carbon future.
